Context
I designed these Harry Potter icons as if they were free Facebook gifts. If they were desktop icons, then they would have to be designed and scaled accordingly. Potter fans enjoy Potter jokes — and Facebook is a good ground for that!
Process
I made these icons in Photoshop, designing off of graphics or working from scratch. In one instance, I started with a drawing by Mary GrandPré, the illustrator for the Potter books (if I were to market that icon, I would have to receive her permission).
I chose to re-create particular Potter items based on my knowledge of and love for Harry Potter as well as my understanding of how people share Facebook gifts and jokes. For example, a user might send a Time-Turner (the hourglass icon) to a friend that is rushing to finish a project and could use more time (in Harry Potter, the Time-Turner allows one to move through time).
As I have only read Harry Potter Books 1-4 (currently in Book 5), these icons reflect that and remain a work-in-progress :).
